Looks like it will be a white Christmas.

Ottawa and much of Canada has been pretty sacked with snow this last week, and it looks like it might just be here to stay for the winter. Time to get out those studded tires!

We have also been playing around with a few new Steelwool logos. Here is the latest which draws inspiration from an old Simplex design, any thoughts?

Steelwool in Paris

October 29th, 2007

paris1.jpg

Just returned from a brief vacation in Paris, while I have always known that bicycles are a huge part of the European lifestyle, I was still shocked how ingrained in Parisian culture cycling really is.

Many of you may already know, in July some 10, 000 bicycles (under the name Velib) were made available for public use in Paris. While I won’t go into the gritty details of how it all works, essentially after paying a small fee you can pick up a bike from one of numerous depots around the city, ride it to another depot, drop it off and be on your way.

paris3.jpg

The bikes are basic city bikes, heavy three speeds, with baskets, chain-covers, and fenders. However they do what they are designed to do, get you from one place to another.

While the scale of the project is in itself is rather amazing, although you will see similar projects in other European cities, the thing that really amazed me was how the French have taken to the project. It seems like thousands of people were always out riding the bikes, women in skirts in high heels, men in business suits, and young kids out for a ride down through the Tuileries gardens. There were line-ups and the depots, and often you would see the depots completely empty.

It’s clear from all the old bikes locked up around Paris that bikes have always played a large role in this city, but it still amazes me that in a few short months 90% of the people riding bikes are using the Velib bikes. It would sure be something to see this happen in a North American city.
